THERE ARE MANY ways to promote safety in the laboratory, from wearing personal protective equipment and utilizing fume hoodsto wiping up spills and labelingchemicals. But one that is commonly overlooked is the choice of decontaminant used to clean equipment and surfaces.  Most laboratories use bleach to kill biological contaminants, but just how safe and effective is this approach?  Is there something better out there?  To find out, the National ForensicScience Technology Center (NFSTC) recently conducted a study comparinga new product, STERIPLEX SD, manufactured by sBioMed LLC,  to a10% solution of Clorox regular chlorine bleach.... At the May 13, 2011 House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Communications, Chair Gus Bilirakis (R-Florida) and Ranking member Laura Richardson (D-California) heard a chilling warning from Alexander Garza, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Homeland Security: “The threat of an attack using a biological agent is real and requires that we remain vigilant. A wide area attack using aerosolized Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria that causes anthrax, is one of the most serious mass casualty biological threats facing the U.S. An anthrax attack could potentially encompass hundreds of square miles; expose hundreds of thousands of people, and cause illness, death, fear, societal disruption and economic damage. If untreated, the disease is nearly 100 percent fatal, which means that those exposed must receive life-saving medical countermeasures as soon as possible.”... Read More

On April 02, 2010, EPA granted registration for Steriplex® Ultra, an antimicrobial product used for anthrax spore decontamination.  This makes two products EPA has registered for this use; Peridox with Electrostatic Decontamination System (Peridox) was registered in 2009.  Previously, between 2001 and 2008, EPA issued emergency exemptions to allow an unregistered use of certain antimicrobial chemicals for cleaning up buildings and their contents contaminated with anthrax spores.... With students on fall break, the Tulsa Public School district decided to utilize the opportunity to sanitize all its campuses before the kids return on Monday.  While TPS students are taking a break, district employees are hard at work using a new product call "BioSpray®" to curb the spread of viruses that have sickened so many students and staff members already this fall.  “It hits the surface, and it's immediately sanitized and disinfected,” said floor technician Dwight Hamilton, who spent Friday using the product to clean six schools. "I am able to in and out in about an hour."  The spray-on solution is specifically made to combat the spread of viruses such as H1N1, the seasonal flu and MRSA. The district's goal is to use BioSpray at all TPS campuses before the end of fall break.  "Anytime we have a chance, when school is out, we get in there, get the job done and get out of the way,” said Hamilton. “We are there.".... Nontoxic And Nonfuming Sporicide: Science At Its Best

Conventional wisdom states that a sporicidal disinfectant must also be toxic and corrosive to be effective. This makes the sterilization of clean rooms, bench tops, table tops, and instruments an arduous, unpleasant, and difficult task, not to mention risky. The use of most disinfectants requires the use of respirators and other cumbersome protective equipment. The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for these conventional products make statements that are scary at best and worrisome at worst...This product takes silver ion technology and turns it “nuclear” for pathogens while remaining completely non-toxic to humans and non-corrosive to materials and equipment...
